He has competed in nineteen editions of the Dakar Rally, winning in 2010, 2018, 2020, and 2024, and finishing third in 2011 and 2021, becoming the oldest winner in the history of the race.
He received the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.

For years, he was the driver with the most points accumulated in the history of the World Rally Championship (1242); currently, he ranks second behind Sébastien Loeb.
He has competed in the most WRC events (196), is third in victories (26) behind Sébastien Loeb (78) and Marcus Grönholm (30), and is second in podium finishes (97).

Long endurance sessions to maintain pace during stages
Swimming: for example, one hour in the morning
Cycling: aerobic base training with 70–80 km rides
Stress tests to define heart rate zones
Specific neck training to support the helmet, including exercises with machines and previously with weights
